Flower painting has a rich history to it, from the Dutch Masters, through the impressionists and on to contemporary explorations today. Maybe seen as outmoded or outdated by some, there is in fact a reason why so many have been attracted to painting them over the years. Few subjects provide such an opportunity to explore vibrancy and tonal variations at the same time as particularly nuanced 3D forms that demand tight drawing and proportioning. They are technically challenging as well as historically charged, but also have a quiet mathematical balance of form that is transient and only lasts a few days. All of this makes for a worthy subject to paint.
